Last night I went down to the good ol’ Bourbon with some friends to check out a great local band, Ninja Spy. The Whiteboard Project opened for them.. and well, I was less than impressed to be honest. Their live show was uninspiring and they played some covers… not particularly well. Ninja Spy chose them to open so hopefully it was just an off night. The Bourbon has been a place I have been going since I was underage and there is still something about that place that I love and hate at the same time. It actually has a pretty interesting history since it’s in gastown.
Anyhow, for those of you who have yet to hear of Ninja Spy I highly recommend that you check them out. They are pretty heavy yet very melodic with some ska influences, kind of like older Incubus mixed with Tool, yet not at all at the same time. When they were called Inspid my friend Dave was producing some of their stuff so he got me onto them. Dave was in one of my favourite local bandsduring the 90’s, Noise Therapy, and is currently in a band called Stealing Eden. So I first checked Inspid out at the Mesa Luna quite a few years back. Since then they have changed their name, but still play all the same music and have even improved their live show. These guys are SUPER energetic on stage, and are insanely talented; it must run in the family (they are brothers). I got a little too into it last night though and when they played their song Out of Tampons I decided to throw a tampon at the stage. I didn’t even expect that I would get it up to the stage but I actually ended up not only getting it on stage, I also managed to hit the lead singer, Joel, in the eye with it! Haha.. whoops. Anyhow, check them out and let me know what you think. It was their live show that really sold me on how good they are so if you can see them live, do it!
