Midday Mirage

I am working on a unit for teaching Lord of the Flies, so I wrote a piece of found poetry using two pages from Chapter 7.

Midday Mirage

They dream of rescue,
a mirage travelled the length of the sea.
Filmy enchantments of ocean
and
fingers in the spray.

One might shield them
from wave after wave.
The remoteness of the sea on
a clipped blue horizon.

rise and fall

You’ll get back,
violently.
Got a ship in your pocket?
He smiled bitterly.

rise and fall

A quiet lagoon numbed his brain,
eating, sweating, stealing away his comfort.
The woods, the island and the ocean swelling,
a kind of shadow.

rise and
fall
