Hip Hop Workshops

Last week our school was very lucky to have Gus Gauntlett come to do a week of workshops with our students. I had Gus work with each of my classes during one 50 minute period. The students were hesitant to give up precious class time so close to the end of term, but I convinced them it was worth it, and they sure won’t doubt me again after the amazing time they had learning about hip hop with Gus! In just one period we managed to briefly cover the history of hip hop, the images we see on MTV hip hop and compare those to the initial reasons for hip hop culture developing at the time, and we wrote and performed our own hip hop work! Although the students were nervous, Gus’s charisma made them feel at ease, and every single student ended up writing and performing something!
